HOLLYWEED ITS A MOVEMENT

Danny Finegood: The Man Behind “Hollyweed”

Danny Finegood: The Man Behind “Hollyweed

The world remembers the iconic transformation of the Hollywood sign into “Hollyweed” in 1976, but not everyone knows the name of the man who made it happen. That man was Danny Finegood an artist, prankster, and creative soul who left behind not only a legendary cultural moment, but also a legacy of kindness and friendship that those who knew him still carry close to their hearts.

The “Hollyweed” Vision

On January 1, 1976, Los Angeles awoke to find the Hollywood sign altered in a clever, unforgettable way: the letters had been transformed to read “Hollyweed.” This was the brainchild of Danny Finegood, who, along with a few friends, used the cover of night to reimagine one of the most famous landmarks in the world. What began as a witty commentary on marijuana laws quickly became a cultural icon, forever tying Danny’s name to the art of protest, humor, and creative mischief.

It wasn’t the last time the sign would be altered but Danny’s original act stands apart as the moment that birthed the legend of “Hollyweed.”

A Man of Integrity and Heart

Those who knew Danny speak of him not only for his public art, but for the deep moral compass and warmth he carried through life. Roban Poirier, a lifelong friend, described him as “an amazing human, of the highest caliber, and morally, very sound.” He recalled knowing Danny since the third grade and admitted simply, “I sure do miss him.”

Others echo the same sentiment. Ruben Bustamante called Danny “a wonderful person who always stepped up to make things better.” He remembered him as someone who listened with intention, saying, “He was always a great listener.”

Justin Pinchot, another close friend, remembered how Danny’s generosity extended even into his work: “Danny was a dear friend, he hired me to repair some of his vintage neon collection. … You are missed, my friend.”

These words paint the picture of a man who not only reshaped a landmark, but who also shaped the lives of those around him with compassion, curiosity, and an ever-present desire to make the world better.

A Lasting Legacy

Though Danny Finegood passed away, his memory endures in the laughter, stories, and love of his friends and family. His birthday, March 23rd, remains a time when those close to him celebrate his life. As Roban Poirier once wrote: “He has been missed by many since he departed Earth.”

Danny may be remembered by the world for “Hollyweed,” but to those who knew him, his legacy is much deeper. He was a loyal friend, a creative spirit, and a man of true moral strength.

As Ruben put it best: “A wonderful person who always stepped up to make things better.”
