Jeff Bridges’ High-Stakes High: How Marijuana Fueled an Oscar-Nominated Role
By Tarik Freitekh
Jeff Bridges has worn many faces over his long Hollywood career—The Dude, the washed-up country singer, the grizzled lawman—but few know that one of his most celebrated roles came with a cannabis twist. According to director Rod Lurie, Bridges was high on marijuana while filming his Oscar-nominated performance as U.S. President Jackson Evans in the 2000 political drama The Contender.
At a recent event at the Clinton Presidential Center, Lurie recalled the nerve-wracking day that nearly went off the rails. The production had rented out the Virginia Statehouse, hired a sea of extras, and prepared to shoot one of the film’s most pivotal moments: a soaring three-page presidential speech. There was just one problem—Jeff Bridges wouldn’t leave his trailer.
When Lurie finally opened the door, he was met with a cloud of smoke so thick it “blew [him] backwards.” The director panicked. “Jeff, you’ve got a three-page speech to give,” he reminded the actor, watching nervously as Bridges slowly fumbled with his costume in classic stoner fashion.
But when the cameras rolled, everything changed. “Boom! He completely transforms,” Lurie said. “Super presidential. Nails the speech in one take.” That performance helped land Bridges an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor, marking another milestone in a career already full of iconic roles.
Ironically, Bridges revealed years later that he avoided marijuana entirely when filming The Big Lebowski, the role that forever cemented him as The Dude. Despite the character’s haze-filled lifestyle, Bridges said he wanted to respect the script’s precision. “It was all done exactly as written. If you add an extra ‘man’ in a spot, it didn’t quite feel right. So I really wanted to have all my wits about me,” he explained in 2014.
Bridges wasn’t the only actor experimenting on set, either. Lurie also recalled working with Peter Fonda, whom he described as “a total hippie” who was stoned daily during filming.
For Bridges, though, the Contender story shows the paradox of cannabis and performance. While it nearly derailed production, it also became part of Hollywood legend—proof that an actor could balance the haze of marijuana with the clarity of genius. He didn’t win the Oscar that year, but he later took home the Best Actor award for Crazy Heart in 2009, further cementing his legacy as one of the greats.
From The Dude to the President, Bridges has always blurred the line between laid-back cool and commanding presence. And in this case, cannabis was part of the script—even if it wasn’t written that way.
